About My Hair: Low porosity 4A curls prone to dryness

Deep conditioning hair masks are a huge part of my routine because I find that they are the best way to help my hair maintain moisture. Samaria emphasizes the importance of hair masks, noting how beneficial they can be for all hair types. “Masks should always be used and added to your hair care regimen as a preventative measure, but they are also amazing for repairing the hair,” she says.

My go-to hair mask is the Shea Moisture Manuka Honey & Mafura Oil Intensive Hydration Masque ($14). I normally put the mask in my hair and leave it on overnight, but if I’m pressed for time, I put a shower cap over my hair and use a heat cap for one hour. When I’m done with either step, I rinse the mask out, put leave-in conditioner in, and style it the next day. Excited to try this product out, I swapped my regular deep conditioner for Bready Beauty's Hair-Mask and left it in my hair overnight.

The Feel: Rich and moisturizing

When I got a feel of the Hair-Mask, I could tell that it would be a nourishing deep conditioner. It has a thicker, creamier consistency than your normal conditioner, but when I applied it to my hair, it sank into my strands instead of sitting on top of them. My hair felt a little heavy when I finished applying the conditioner to each section, but to me, that’s a non-issue—I’m fine with my hair temporarily feeling heavy if it means my strands are getting enough moisture from a deep conditioner.

The Application: Use these pro tips

I have a process for how I deep condition my hair, but I always question whether I’m doing it properly. Thankfully, Samaria shared some best practices for how to get the most out of Hair-Mask.

Depending on how much hair you have, she recommends putting your hair into four to eight sections. Then, use the mask on clean damp or wet hair while using your fingers to get a majority of the tangles out. “Always apply to the most damaged parts of the hair first: Ends, mid-lengths, then roots," Samaria Says. "Apply the mask while finger combing, then comb or brush to detangle while the hair is wet." Familiar with sectioning my hair, I used a comb to create eight sections and applied the mask.

If you, like me, break your wash-day up into multiple days, Samaria approves of leaving the mask on overnight, especially if your hair is dry or dehydrated—but don’t overdo it. “I don’t recommend leaving it in repetitively or longer than an overnight period, because hair needs oxygen to survive and stay healthy. Too much masking for long periods of time can lead to breakage,” she says.

I was glad to know that leaving the mask on overnight was ok, but having abandoned finger detangling out of sheer frustration and impatience years ago, I decided to give it another shot before using my detangling brush once the mask was in my hair.

The Results: Soft, moisturized hair with less shedding

This product is 100 percent legit—I literally have nothing negative to say about it. It was the perfect time for me to try the mask as well because I was going back to my curls after I had worn my hair blow-dried and flat ironed for two weeks. Towards the end of my straight hair stint, my hair was so dry—I knew it would need as much moisture as it could get to revive my curls, and Bread's Hair-Mask totally delivered.

When I was rinsing the mask out, my hair felt super soft and moisturized. I also noticed that Samaria’s finger detangling tip in combination with the mask made it so much easier for me to add my next set of products, detangle my curls again, and start my twist out. I’ve used other deep conditioners that haven’t made my hair feel as nourished, and once they are washed out, my hair still feels dry and crunchy; this aggravates my tangles and leads to a ton of shed hair and breakage. I had a much smaller amount of broken and shed hair after using the Hair-Mask, which I took as a sign that my hair couldn’t get enough of this product.

The Value: A worthy investment for the right person

To be clear, I truly enjoyed using this mask; it made my hair feel amazing. For about $28 and 12 ounces of product, though, I think it’s too expensive for me to use as a weekly treatment—I used close to half of the deep conditioner in just one use. I’m not a hair expert nor am I a professional, but I think I have too much hair that needs too much product. Repurchasing this mask would make sense for me if I were to use it monthly. If your hair is less dense or doesn’t require as much moisture as mine, I think 12 ounces for $28 could take you really far.

Shea Moisture Manuka Honey & Mafura Oil Intensive Hydration Masque: A staple in my hair care routine, I am never without the Shea Moisture Manuka Honey & Mafura Oil Intensive Hydration Masque ($14). Amazing for dry, over-processed, damaged, and color-treated hair, this mask is a worthy alternative to the Bread Beauty Supply Hair-Mask.

Camille Rose Coconut Water Penetrating Hair Treatment: If your hair responds well to products infused with coconut, it will love the Camille Rose Coconut Water Penetrating Hair Treatment ($20). This deeply moisturizing mask is great for brittle, dehydrated hair, and is a few bucks cheaper than the Hair-Mask.

As I Am Hydration Elation Conditioner: Affordable but still impactful, the Hydration Elation Conditioner by As I Am ($10) penetrates hair to hydrate, strengthen, and repair. Don’t let the price tag fool you—this mask really works.

Final Verdict

The Bread Beauty Supply Hair-Mask Creamy Deep Conditioner was a total delight to use, from its scent to how amazing it made my hair feel. Following Samaria's tips, I noticed that I didn’t have as much breakage or shedding. Easily one of the best hair masks I’ve ever used, I see myself using this product again in the future.
